Runners Have Choices of Paths

Posted

With a wide-ranging trail network, runners have many paths to follow in and around Sitka.

The looping trails in Sitka National Historic Park offer a less challenging run for those interested in just a jog along flat terrain, though the trail is often congested when cruise ships are in port. The Cross Trail and Indian River Trail are intermediate options with more elevation change.

The Sawmill Creek Road multi-use trail runs from the National Historic Park to the old pulp mill five miles southeast of town. In good weather, runners can expect mountain vistas. The best views from the multi-use trail begin south of Whale Park as the route turns east and follows the coast of Silver Bay, which is flanked by high peaks often capped in snow.

Caution should be exercised when running on trails, as the ground often can be slick because of rain; and bear stray is recommended because of the brown bears that are present much of the year.

The annual Alpine Adventure Run is scheduled for July 19, 2025. Limited entry registration opens April 23 and costs $50. The challenging course climbs Gavan Hill from downtown and follows the ridge trail to the Harbor Mountain Road. Runners climb over 3,000 vertical feet in the seven-mile traverse.
