For good bargains and entertainment, stop by the White Elephant thrift shop at 323 Lincoln Street.
The White E, whose motto is “Sitkans Serving Sitkans,” sells donated goods of all types to raise money for community organizations, charities and individuals.
Volunteers for the non-profit Sitka White Elephant Shop Inc. take in and clean up the donated items, which include clothing of all types and sizes, books, games, housewares, children’s items, souvenirs and art. The volunteers dispose of non-usable items, run the shop days it’s open, and manage the operation.
The thrift shop was created in 1952 as a way for the local Easter Seals Society and what was then known as ACCA – Alaska Crippled Children and Adults – to earn money for charitable work. For the first 15 years, the shop moved from space to borrowed space. Then, in January 1967, volunteers set up shop at 323 Seward Street. They leased the land from the city for $1 a year and built the shop with donated money and revenues.
Regular hours are 6-8 p.m. on Mondays; and noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays Thursdays and Saturdays. The phone number is (907) 747-3430 and the email address is sitkawhiteelephant@gmail.com.
