The Path of Hope, established by the Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society, winds through the trees in a secluded part of Lower Moller Park, off Moller Drive.
Benches and inspirational plaques have been placed at intervals, in an effort to help those dealing with cancer. The Book of Hope is the focal point within the park, centrally located on a flagstone path. The sculpture includes pages with inspirational verses scattered through the park.
Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society Inc. was incorporated in 2000, and its first projects were placing two benches with plaques at Crescent Harbor in February 2001, and dedicating the Path of Hope in June 2001. Sitka Trail Works began building pathways in 2003.
Benches, landscaping, artwork, signs, and the Book of Hope and Flame of Hope sculptures were added over the years.
The .15 mile path, open all year, is accessible to those with mobility difficulties; the central path is level, and all the paths in the park have a compact, graveled surface.
Each June, during National Cancer Survivor Month, a celebration walk is held at the park.
Another Society project has been providing mini-grants to individuals affected by cancer. The money comes from donations, fundraisers and grants.
The board of directors, all cancer survivors, serve without compensation. Donations are welcome, and are tax deductible.
