The annual Sitka Salmon Derby, sponsored by the Sitka Sportsman’s Association, is held over the Memorial Day weekend and the following weekend. This year, the 70th, the fishing days are May 24, 25, 26 and May 31 and June 1.
Thousands of dollars in cash and merchandise prizes are given away for the largest king and for “hidden weight” fish. So far, the largest prize-winning king salmon was a 73-pounder, caught the first year. Last year’s winner was Ron Davis, who turned in a 39.5-pound king.
Money raised goes toward the association’s community projects, including maintaining and operating the Bob LaGuire Indoor Shooting Range next to the ferry terminal, and providing gun safety and personal protection firearms classes for the public.
The association is at 5203 Halibut Point Road, P.O. Box 3030, Sitka, Alaska 99835.The email address is sitkasportsmans@yahoo.com.
